After 53 years, California's Mt. Fuji Garden Center is closing

Katsumi Shiba, inspired by a mountain up north, opened the Upland garden center in 1965 and worked there until he retired in 2007 and passed the center on to his son, Lindsay.
Shiba and his siblings sold the 2.5 acre garden center to GFR Homes, which plans to build 37 condominiums in its place. The business may close by the end of July.
“It’s going to disappear, unfortunately,” said Shiba, 59. “This is the only job I’ve ever known.”
Shiba had been working at the garden center since 1970, long before he took over after his father's retirement.

Wickline's Florist and Garden Center in Ohio closes after more than 50 years

The well-known Xenia, Ohio business closed its doors on June 17 following the retirement of the owners, Marcus Wickline, a son of the owners told this news outlet.
Wickline said he could not take over the family's garden center because of his own growing landscaping business and his brother is working in teaching.
“The hardest part for me is meeting someone new and they say ‘I’ve been looking for a place like this,’” Wickline said.
