Hiring: A challenge for many small businesses

Data shows independent garden centers are not alone in their struggle to find qualified candidates.

Unemployment has been a national concern in the years since the Great Recession, but recent information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has been encouraging. After reaching a high of 10 percent in 2009, the unemployment rate has been declining steadily, remaining below 5 percent for the past year. That’s good news for the economy as a whole, but there’s a complication involved with falling unemployment figures: Filling job openings with qualified individuals can become more difficult — especially for seasonal businesses like independent garden centers. The National Federation of Independent Business compiled data to get an idea of how small businesses across the U.S. are filling their vacancies and coping with a shortage of high-quality job-seekers.
