New for 2013, Santa Fe phlox ‘Perfect Pink’ is easy to grow in the garden, but it’s almost never available to gardeners because it’s very difficult to propagate. David Salman, chief horticulturist for High Country Gardens, selected the original plant for its huge (1.5 inch diameter) flowers with deep pink petals that surround a small white eye. Santa Fe Phlox grows as a tiny mound of stems with narrow, blue-green deciduous foliage topped by glowing pink flowers. The plant blooms in late spring, and then it re-flowers after summer rains. This long-lived plant, which is native to New Mexico, west Texas and northern Mexico, reaches a tidy 5 to 8 inches tall and 12 to 15 inches wide. USDA Zones 4-8.
