From the Corvallis Gazette-Times:
Friends and family of longtime business owner and former Corvallis City Councilor Walter Martin Schmidt say they will always remember him as a "pillar of the community" and "a rock in the foundation of Corvallis."
Schmidt, a Corvallis native, died Jan. 24 at the age of 93.
He is perhaps best remembered as the founder of Schmidt’s Garden Center, which he started in 1959 alongside his wife, Paula Schmidt. The couple began selling hardware on Grant Avenue before moving around the corner in 1965 to the current location.
