In a press release sent out on Tuesday, March 10, Sakata Seed America announced that it was no longer participating in the 2020 California Spring Trials, citing concerning surrounding the coronavirus.
“We do not take this decision lightly; great effort is put into this event and we look forward to connecting with our industry partners and showcasing our genetics year after year," said Joe Cimino, head of Sakata's ornamental group, per the release. "However, it’s important that we err on the side of caution at this time rather than risk the health of our staff, dependents, customers and their families."
Sakata's stop was scheduled to be hosted in Salinas, California in Santa Clara County. Other stops in the city are the Floricultura — featuring ABZ Seeds, Beekenkamp and Monrovia — and American Takii.
Griffin Greenhouse Supplies also withdrew from the event this week, citing employee safety.
Sakata's decision came after Santa Clara County issued an order to limit residents from having mass gatherings due to the coronavirus.
“Although Monterey County, where our Salinas greenhouses and event site are located, has yet to put such an order in effect, this is a precautionary measure with our guests and their families at the forefront of our minds," Cimino said, per the release.
According to the release, Sakata will be showcasing its line of products in some other format in the near future. It also invites people to visit with them at the next industry-wide event: Cultivate'20.
