Raleigh, N.C. – No matter how cold it gets outside, the greenhouse at Atlantic Gardening Company persists in endless summer. With a 5000 square foot space containing houseplants, succulents and cacti and colorful orchids, the company aims to gives its customers the experience of being in the tropics when they visit. As one Yelp reviewer comments, “the greenhouse [made] me feel like I was back in Miami.”
In early February, the garden center’s annual Orchid Open House (Feb. 3–4) will showcase the largest selection of the year. The greenhouse receives orchid and tropical shipments from as far away as California and Hawaii every week. This gives customers thousands of plants to choose from over the weekend, when everything in the greenhouse is 20 percent off.
This year, the Triangle Orchid Society will be hosting several classes and an orchid competition at the event. “Can I Grow Orchids at Home” will be presented by the Society at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The orchid competition begins at 10 a.m., with winners announced at 4 p.m. The winners will receive a $50 gift card to the store. Anyone may enter the contest. Those who wish to are asked to bring their blooming orchid to the store by 10 a.m. on Feb. 3 and pick it up by closing at 5 p.m. The garden center’s newly installed Garden Bar will also be selling beer, wine and mimosas at the event.
“Orchids are an integral part of the company,” says Gary Prevost, who bought the business two years ago. Likewise, one Yelp reviewer writes, “The showstopper here is the orchid collection.” The company insists on quality, selecting orchids with a minimum of 8-9 buds, often traveling to Florida to visit their growers, for its greenhouse. Winter is actually prime season for orchids, and the open house falls during a time of year when most orchids naturally bloom.
The garden center’s designers also create container arrangements in pots of all shapes, colors and sizes. These arrangements are so beautiful in fact, they’ve graced the tables inside the Governor’s Mansion and Beyonce’s hotel room.
