Paint brands name 2017 colors of the year

Each fall, fashion magazines and experts in the industry announce their clothing and apparel trend predictions for 2017. Paint brands do the same with colors, and Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Behr have all announced color palettes they believe will be influential next year.

Benjamin Moore's Color of the Year 2017 is Shadow 2117-30, which the the company describes as "a rich, royal amethyst." Though it's a very deep purple hue, the color fits its name, as it also includes dark gray tones. They also named 22 other colors that complement Shadow.

Sherwin-Williams also selected a neutral color for 2017: Poised Taupe SW 6039. "This timeless neutral is modern, classic and a beautiful balance of warm and cool," the company said in a press release announcing the 2017 color. "As we prepared our 2017 Color of the Year selection, it became clear that neutrals are beginning a transition from the monochrome grey of the past five years to a more complex taupe and brown."

Sherwin-Williams went on to explain that "Gray has enjoyed its assent to 'favorite' status over the last five years – but 2017 will mark the beginning of a warming trend. Influences such as natural or organic materials, weathered and worn finishes and global cultural preferences have suggested alternatives to a primarily gray existence."

The company also created a collection of other popular colors for 2017, including "Vintage Pastels" and "Organic Re-Imagined."

The paint brands are moving to the opposite end of the color spectrum for the 2017 trend predictions compared to their 2016 selections. Benjamin Moore's 2016 color was "Simply White," and Behr and Sherwin-Williams also named off-white colors as their featured hue.

Other paint companies selected purple-grey colors as the 2017 hue of the year as well, including Glidden, which named "Byzantine Blue, a sultry yet playful mix of violet and periwinkle," Olympic Paints, which selected the soft violet "Cloudberry," and PPG Paints, which unveiled "Violet Verbena" as its annual color.

Meanwhile, Behr arranged its 2017 color trend palette into three categories, Confident, Composed and Comfortable, and did not name one specific color. All include neutral grays and browns, but brighter colors are more dominant. The Comfortable palette features soft pastel pink, peach and blue, the Composed palette includes "deep, earth-inspired tones and rich jeweled shades," according to the company, and Confident includes fiery red and orange, but also a deep, more muted green-blue called "Jade Dragon."
