Garden center retailers are accustomed to displaying trees, topiary and nursery stock in rows and blocks, presenting as “warehouses” with the result being uninspiring, lackluster, traditional displays. These display habits and systems were the result of handling balled & burlapped trees for years. But as container-grown material becomes the norm and not the exception, it seems as though the display topic may never have come up for discussion or thought.
As more and more retail trees are grown in containers — and this trend is expected to continue and expand to even larger sizes — retailers have lagged behind, even struggled with effective displays systems that meet the needs of care as well as for presentation and shopability.
Certainly blow over of container-grown material has been the number one concern for retailers, and many solutions have been presented that are effective. Retailers today use many systems to combat and solve the blow over issue that can be costly day to day with labor and product damage. But still, these systems fall short of our primary functions as retailers, merchandisers and sellers. The time has come for a fresh look at the challenge container-grown material brings to the garden center and the opportunity.
Successful garden center retailers have turned their efforts to improving product displays in ways that support care, reduce costs and increase sales. Today’s retail shoppers are very much accustomed to shopping in clean areas, paved, and organized with wide aisle spaces. Gone are the days when mulching trees supports sales, the retailers focus must turn to safety and shopability, particularly for the aging baby boomers. Is it necessary that your customers get their feet dirty while shopping?
The opportunity to grow retail nursery sales through displays is significant. Displays that raise perceived value, inspire and suggest. Consider the furniture industry — clean displays, vignettes, inspiring, solution-oriented. The needs for sophisticated displays is real for our nursery products, much like furniture.
TreeDisplays.com is a new company that has developed display systems for retail garden centers. Erector Set-like, these displays connect together, creating vignettes for seasonal inspiring product presentations, and at the same time solving many care issues for the retailer.
Great retailers today understand customer desired shopping behaviors and understand that displays are not just to hold inventory, NO — displays create sales, solve problems, answer questions and suggest and inform.
