A trip around the world

From the colorful Holi Festival in India to the Día de los Muertos celebration in Mexico, the event showcased a dazzling display of cultural celebrations.

Hicks Nurseries, located in Long Island, New York, kicked off its spring season with its 30th Annual Flower and Garden Show on March 12. Due to concerns regarding customer safety and spread of the coronavirus, the event ended on March 16, ahead of its original end date of March 29. This year, the theme was “Celebration Around the World,” which featured garden displays inspired by iconic worldwide festivals and events. The displays ranged from inspiration drawn from countries across the world. Due to the shortened timeline, many customers missed out on the event but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a stroll through the photos. Here’s what the event had to offer.

The Chinese New Year garden featured a dragon winding through the display, which was full of flowering cherries, azaleas and flowers in shades of red and yellow.

The Holi garden, inspired by the colorful Indian festival of the same name, featured pops of colorful flowers and lotus, which floated in pools of water.

The Tulip Festival garden paid homage to the tulip festivals held April through May across the Netherlands and featured an array of colorful springtime blooms for visitors to enjoy.

The Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) garden honored the Mexican tradition with an “ofrenda” (a collection of objects placed on a ritual display during the event) surrounded with marigolds, agave, cactus varieties and other plants native to the Southwest.

The Hawaiian Luau garden featured lush tropical flowers and a waterfall reminiscent of Hawaiian landscapes.

The Independence Day Celebration garden featured hydrangeas, geraniums and other summer flowers in patriotic red, white and blue colors.

The Mardi Gras garden adopted its flair from the Carnival of Brazil, and even included a parade complete with a giant macaw float and a garden of agave and palms.
