Dan Woldhuis, owner of Woldhuis Farms Sunrise Greenhouse, wasn’t impressed with Power Planter augers when he first ordered them a few years ago. It’s not that he didn’t like them. It was the opposite: Power Planter augers are solid, well-built American-made products, he says. The issue was that customers spurned them in favor of lower-quality augers — which were much cheaper.
“I probably had three or four Power Planters hanging on the hooks next to the other ones,” he says. “They weren’t that noticeable, and they weren’t moving.”
The issue at the Grant Park, Illinois, IGC he reiterates, wasn’t the Power Planter products — they just got lost in the noise of all the other merchandise, which had a cheaper price tag.
However, this past spring, representatives from the company provided him with a display that would prominently feature the augers, and they’ve been flying off the racks ever since. Finally, customers seem willing to pay a higher price for a better-quality product. Woldhuis credits Power Planter’s displays for turning his sales around, as the products now catch his customers’ eyes.
“I’ve had a display sitting out all summer and it’s pretty much empty again. So it’s going really well,” he says. As gardeners flock into the store for their fall plantings, Woldhuis expects a continued strong demand for the Power Planter augers, especially as customers start digging their fall bulbs.
Woldhuis has carried the Power Planter augers for a few years, but with the addition of the display rack, this is the first time they’ve sold this well and have become a standout product in the category.
He also shares that the Power Planter augers are extraordinarily durable and hold up much longer than their cheaper competitors. Additionally, as Power Planter has become a more prominent advertiser in the market, there’s more brand recognition, he says.
“People walk in here specifically looking for the Power Planter augers now. And what sells is what I’ll carry,” he says.
