Lotus (Nelumbo)

Nelumbo is commonly called sacred lotus in reference to the sacred and symbolic status the flower holds in Buddhism and Hinduism. Each flower blooms for about three days, opening in the morning and closing at night each day. Flowers are followed by the formation of a cone-shaped, woody-like structure that holds seed pods and is often used in dried flower arrangements.

Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus fluitans)

A petite version of a floater with the same filtering power of his larger cousins. They are also not as invasive as their cousins (water hyacinths and water lettuce). The red roots also add more interest and are a better use of pond surface space.

Carnivorous sarracenias in a Floating Island

Our Carnivorous sarracenias (Pitcher Plant) do best with roots submerged in water but with a dry crown and foliage. This is why Netherland Bulb grows this plant in a floating island; it allows the root system to be submerged in water, and the protective buoyant foam keeps the plant dry. The 2018 crop looks gorgeous, and this plant in particular received a lot of praise and recognition at the MANTS show in Baltimore in January.
