
After the dust settles at retail stores across the country and the madness of the winter holidays dies down, economists take stock of the spending patterns and trends throughout the shopping season. In 2016, various sectors of the retail industry underwent noticeable changes in spending growth and relevancy, as detailed in the Holiday 2016 SpendTrend Report compiled by First Data. Sales growth was higher in some categories than in others as compared to the 2015 holiday season, and the e-commerce and brick-and-mortar retail dichotomy continued to widen.
