Cornelius Nursery celebrates grand opening of its Katy, Texas location

The Texas-based garden center will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Feb. 22.

Cornelius Nursery has opened its second Houston-area store in Katy, Texas. The store, located on a two-and-a-half-acre site, will celebrate its grand opening on Feb. 22.

The store will have approximately 4,000 square feet of indoor retail space that will feature home décor, seasonal decorations and a custom design center for adornments such as wreaths or garlands.

The open concept outdoor shopping area will encompass 30,000 square feet and showcase Cornelius Nursery’s latest offerings in trees, shrubs, groundcovers and more. A 9,000-square-foot greenhouse will provide additional space to display tropical plants, flowers, lawn decor and other gardening products for sale.

The original Cornelius Nursery store opened in Houston in 1938. The Katy store will resemble a classic, Texas farmhouse with a rustic stone-covered exterior and wraparound porch. The surrounding flowerbeds will be landscaped to provide seasonal gardening inspiration for shoppers.

Cornelius Nursery is owned and operated by Fort Worth-based Calloway’s Nursery, which is No. 4 on Garden Center’s 2018 Top 100 Independent Garden Centers List. Calloway's decided to open a store in Katy because it is one of the fastest growing cities in the greater Houston area, says Calloway's Nursery CEO Marce Ward.

“We always look to open new stores in thriving communities that are experiencing rapid population growth, like Katy, so we can be a knowledgeable gardening resource to local families,” Ward says. “Our team strives to make gardening fun, easy and successful for customers by offering the best plants and products for sale, as well as expert advice from the numerous Texas Certified Nursery Professionals in our stores.”

The Katy store will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22. Locals and members of the media are invited to attend. The store will offer a variety of specials to celebrate the grand opening weekend.

Additionally, through May 25, both Houston-area stores will host the spring Garden Series every Saturday morning. The Garden Series includes informational sessions on topics that range from indoor and outdoor succulents to how to attract butterflies to your yard.

The Katy store opening has added approximately 25 new jobs to the local economy. Cornelius Nursery will continue to hire qualified individuals through the spring season. Interested parties can apply at calloways.com or in person at the store.
