Plant breeders put on their most creative displays at California Spring Trials, offering up fun ideas for plant merchandising. By highlighting varieties’ best qualities, creating selfie opportunities and promoting planting ideas, each company showed off unique marketing concepts that will draw customers in. Take a look at the ideas we found at stops along the Pacific coast. — Kate Spirgen
1. PanAmerican Seed had some fun creating a selfie opportunity by turning its FuzzyFern Frizz Asparagus into a mascot. The sign, complete with the #IMetFrizz hashtag encouraged visitors to interact with the “plant with personality.”
2. & 3.The table settings at the Dümmen Orange stop showed off cut flower and planter ideas for entertaining. Besides the traditional bouquets, the company presented alternative options like calandiva, pereskia and gasteria.
4. & 5. Succulents took the spotlight when Syngenta made its foray into the market with a new line. By planting an entire gazebo from hanging baskets to planters to the entire roof, the company showed what succulents can do in a whole new way.
6. Benary inspired gift purchases with a shopping cart that included gift bags with thank-you notes. Perfect for holiday presents, hostess gifts and more, the potted plants were displayed in a way that inspired last-minute purchases.
7. Danziger created a pollinator-friendly selfie station with props like butterfly wings and antennae for visitors to wear when they posed for photos. Plant stakes with cartoon bees in the pots also highlighted the varieties as pollinator magnets.
8. Showing off pansies’ potential for fall, Syngenta created planters out of plastic pumpkins, giving visitors inspiration for autumn and beyond.
9. Sakata partnered with watercolor artist Jeannie Dickson to highlight the beauty of their SunPatiens line. The collaboration even included a video of Dickson’s painting process so visitors could watch her work.
10. Celebrating the ‘blazing color’ of the bright-red Dragon’s Breath, Sakata planted the celosia in a fire pit setting. The scene, complete with patio chairs, inspired attendees to stop and admire.
11. A whiteboard diagram showed SelectaOne visitors exactly where to plant each variety for the ideal container combination, taking the guesswork out of purchasing and planting.
