First Editions® 2016 Barberry Collection
First Editions® Lambrusco (Berberis thunbergii ‘BailElla’) is a new drought-tolerant barberry that is an excellent groundcover with a compact, tight, spreading habit. The foliage emerges red and deepens to burgundy as the season progresses. First Editions® Moscato™ (Berberis thunbergii ‘BailAnna’) has new foliage that emerges lime green with a contrasting orange/peach margin, which fades to green in summer. This variety forms a densely branched, spreading mound, which fits easily in smaller spaces.
First Editions® French Cabaret™ Blush Hibiscus
(Hibiscus syriacus ‘Mindoub 1’ PPAF)
French Cabaret™ is the first in a series of sterile doubles from French breeder Patrick Pineau at Minier Nursery. It blooms profusely from July to October with double flowers in large pompoms resembling those of double carnations or the petticoats of the dancers in Parisian cabarets, hence the French Cabaret™ name. Dark pink flower buds open to a delicate blush pink with shades of white. French Cabaret® is compact in size, heat tolerant and easy to grow in the landscape.
First Editions® Ruffled Red Magic™ Crape Myrtle
(Lagerstroemia ‘PIILAG-VII’ PPAF)
Talk about red AND ruffled! This new crape myrtle has distinctly different, carnation-like, glowing red flowers that show beautifully against the lustrous dark green foliage. Foliage turns orange-red in fall. The habit is upright, but compact, with dense branching. Like the others in the Magic series from First Editions®, Ruffled Red™ re-blooms in late summer if the first flush of flowers is deadheaded. It is also resistant to Cercospora leaf spot and powdery mildew, which is quite a breeding accomplishment in red crapes. Bred by Plant Introductions, Inc.
First Editions® Pink Sparkler™ Spirea
(Spiraea betulifolia ‘COURISPI01’ PPAF)
If you are a fan of Spirea ‘Tor’, you will love this new twist on Spiraea betulifolia. Bred in France, Pink Sparkler™ blooms in early summer with large pink flowers at the terminals of this rounded shrub. An added bonus is that in autumn, new flowers are formed and bloom along the leaf axils in each stem. These flowers are smaller, but there are more of them and add a pop of pink color to the fall landscape. Then, the leaves turn a lovely burgundy red in autumn. The shape is a lovely rounded mound and this plant needs very little pruning to keep its perfect shape.
First Editions® Spring Lace Viburnum
(Viburnum ‘Spring Lace’)
This compact, rounded viburnum would be a beautiful shrub even if it didn’t bloom. But boy, does it bloom! In May, this beauty is covered in pure white, fragrant, lacy inflorescenses. Sterile florets are nicely balanced with fertile flowers. The leathery, dark green leaves turn wine-red in early fall and are evergreen in mild winters. Plants are compact and well behaved. No fruit set to date. Introduced by Plant Introductions, Inc.
