Garden Center magazine honored with 2018 ASBPE awards

The business-to-business publication received recognition for editorial and design work from the American Society of Business Publication Editors.


Valley View, Ohio - Garden Center magazine, a B-2-B publication serving the independent garden center industry, won several regional awards from the The American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) during an April 20 event.

ASBPE, the professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors, and designers employed in the business, trade, and specialty press, presented Garden Center magazine with six awards for 2018. The winning entries were counted under the ASBPE's Heartland Region, an area including Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia.

Stephanie Antal, art director of Garden Center magazine, received a regional gold-level design award for her infographics entry, which included examples of the publication's monthly Last Look department. In each issue of Garden Center, Last Look presents various statistics and information in eye-catching graphic displays. This entry is also a finalist for the National Azbee Awards of Excellence in the Infographics design category.

Antal and photographer Tracy Walsh won a regional bronze design award in the category of Opening Page/Spread-Photo for Garden Center’s March 2017 cover story “Bet the farm.” Garden Center editor Michelle Simakis also won a regional silver award in the Company Profile print category for the same article, which she reported and wrote. Additionally, this entry is a finalist for the National Azbee Awards of Excellence in the Company Profile print category.

Contributing writer/editor Brooke Bilyj won a regional bronze award in the Feature Article - General Interest print category for her article “Why aren’t garden centers hooked on ’ponics?”, as well as a regional silver award in the How-To Article print category for her entry: “5 steps to boost your garden center’s brand visibility.”

Associate editor Conner Howard won a regional silver award in the News Analysis print category for the October, 2017 Garden Center cover story “When the storm breaks.”
